St.
Odilo First Grade
It is amazing to actually see the growth that takes place in lst grade from beginning to end! First of all, Reading really takes off in lst grade with the Superkids reading program we began implementing last year. It is a comprehensive program that includes reading, phonics, grammar, writing and so much more - but above all, IT IS FUN!!!
Math goes from comparing numbers or very simple addition to real addition and subtraction. The children in lst grade also begin learning such concepts as place value, time and money; with as many hands-on activities we can find :}!
First grade is also a time to introduce the students to Social Studies. We learn about simple U.S. history, such as the story of the pilgrims and Native Americans, basic geography which includes our country, where our state is located, map skills and about people from other countries. Science is very fun and exciting at this stage; it offers a way for lst graders to discover the world around them; beginning with Living and Non-living things, the 5 Senses, the Water Cycle, Plants and Animals to our Planet and the Solar System. But the most exciting is our unit on Life Cycles. Not only do we learn about the transformation of a tadpole into a frog, or the caterpillar that wraps itself in a cocoon and emerges a butterfly, we actually incubate duck eggs in our classroom and eagerly anticipate the arrival of the little ducklings that hatch from the eggs!!!
Most importantly, we have daily Religion instruction which focuses on prayers, creation, the story of Adam and Eve, the Blessed Trinity, the Sacraments and much, much more. As lst graders we try to incorporate all that we learn into our daily lives - beginning with the Golden Rule: Do Unto Others.
The lst grade passes quickly, but the students absorb a wealth of knowledge that will serve them in future school and life. It is a critical time that piques their interests and desire to learn. I love First Grade and your child will too! :}
Mrs.
Tracey Ocampo
Tracey Ocampo
combines her love of learning with her affection for
teaching young children to make first grade at St. Odilo
special. “Watching children grow physically, socially and
intellectually throughout the school year is a tremendous
experience.” Mrs. Ocampo incorporates as many learning
modalities into lessons as possible. First grade students
move, touch, read and listen to learn. Whether it’s poetry
that’s sung, art at the round-table, or science through
watching chicks hatch, lessons in Mrs. Ocampo’s room are
fun to learn. She believes in consistency in behavior and
classroom management so that “children know what I expect
of them. They feel safe and thrive in an environment where
goals are attainable.” She believes that education is a
mutually supportive relationship among teachers, students
and parents.
